Sorry if this is a repeat email from last night, but signal 9 can mean you ran out of memory. You should try allocating more memory to the VM.

You could also try running the latest freesufer version = 7.3.2 which is compiled for Ubuntu 20 and you can get from, https://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/pub/dist/freesurfer/7.3.2/freesurfer_ubuntu20-7.3.2_amd64.deb. I would uninstall 7.1.1 if you are going to try 7.3.2, but a different version won’t make a difference if you are running short on available RAM.
