What is your recon-all command line? Usually people create a SUBJECTS_DIR somewhere other than in the freesurfer install directory. You can do this either by setting the env variable or specifying -sd <recon dir> on the command line

when i use recon-all, i get this message: 

mkdir: cannot create directory '/usr/local/freesurfer/7.2.0/subjects/name': Permission denied

I did the solutions that were previously suggested on the site, but it still didn't work.
