When mapping the area (or volume) to a target surface it assures that the sum of the area over all vertices of the target is equal to that of the source (conservation). The basic idea is that the area of a patch in the target space should be the area of the patch when mapped to the source space (though this cannot be rigidly adhered to as the patch gets smaller and smaller). a new version is here

That is the area of the white surface. But don't use this unless you have updated to the new version of mris_preproc.

Hi freesurfer experts:
i'm using qdec to perform statistical analysis in Freesurfer 5.0.0, within 'Measure' menu in 'Design' tab, the default is 'thickness', however, there are other measurements such as 'area' and 'area.pial'.  the latter seems meaning area in pial surface. what does the former mean? does it mean area in white matter surface?
