[freesurfer] installation------------------------

Hi all
I'm a new freesurfer user and I have some troubles installing the program.
after moving to
cd /usr/local
I typed freesurfer-virtual:~> tar xzvf freesurfer-Linux-<platform>-<release>-full.tar.gz
replacing <platform>-<release> with
freesurfer-Linux-centos4-stable-pub-v4.3.1
I get the following error message
Cannot
>> open: No such file or directory
>>
>> tar: Error is not recoverable: exiting now
>>
>> tar: Child returned status 2
>>
>> tar: Error exit delayed from previous errors
I don´t know exactly what I'm doing wrong, this may happen because I'm not in the right directory or something?
How can I get informnation about my Linux and Freesurfer software version.
Any help will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance

Is that file in that directory? What size is it? Do you have write permissions to that folder?

Hi Doug
At least i've made sure that freesurfer location is in
/usr/local/freesurfer
The Freesurfer properties tab says that it weights 3.1 GB
Now, the Permissions tab says:
Owner: freesurfer (freesurfer)
Access: Read&Write
Group: freesurfer
Acces: Read only
Others :Read only
Thanks Doug

So do you have write access? Also, remember to send the entire email thread in the letter. I delete emails aggressively so I won't always know what you are talking about. Also, please respond to the list. Others may be interested, and it gets saved in the archive.
