thank you so much. There is only one version for my Linux version 4:5.12.3-141 and
recon-all ran w/o error now. so my next step is to figure out to view the results.

yes, if you don't have perl, then it will fail. I don't know which version of perl you need. I run with v5.8.8, but the mni tools are pretty old, so I bet an older version of perl will work.
