You'll have to load it as an overlay to a surface, eg,
freeview -f $FREESURFER_HOME/subjects/fsaverage/surf/lh.inflated:overlay=fmcpr.up.sm5.fsaverage.lh.nii.gz
there won't be much to see :)

and got fmcpr.up.sm5.fsaverage.lh.nii.gz for data sampled to the left hemisphere of fsaverage. I was trying to visualize these data through freeview -v since I succesfully opened the orginal data f.nii, but got nothing.
