Freesurfer is a fairly large and complex software bundle that contains plenty of dependencies if you are going to attempt to build the entire package. However, all libraries that are required to run freesurfer are provided with the prebuilt freesurfer bundle, so long as you are running on the platform for which it was built (if running on Ubuntu jpeg and tiff libraries may need to be added or symlinked).
