Hi Geo,
   you do not necessarily need to use matlab.
If you're familiar with python you can do it quite easily using:

csv<http://docs.python.org/library/csv.html> for the input
scipy.io<http://docs.scipy.org/doc/scipy/reference/io.html> for the output

can convert my data files to .mat (through NIRS-SPM) but can't figure
out how to reformat the files to .nirs.
