I used

recon-all -i $(ls | head -1) -s $SUBJECT
recon-all -autorecon-all -s $SUBJECT

where $(ls | head -1) is the first image file.

Docs for recon-all state that "-autorecon-all" is the same as "-all", so
that doesn't seem to be a problem.
