How can it be both? mne_setup_sh is for the posix (bourne, bash) shell and mne_setup for csh/tcsh?

You need to set the MNE_ROOT and MATLAB_ROOT environment variables correctly.

For posix/bourne/bash shells:

export MNE_ROOT=<MNE_directory>
export MATLAB_ROOT=<Matlab_directory>
. $MNE_ROOT/bin/mne_setup_sh

(Note the dot in the beginning)

For csh/tcsh

setenv MNE_ROOT <MNE_directory>
setenv MATLAB_ROOT <Matlab_directory>
source $MNE_ROOT/bin/mne_setup

If your setup is correct, mne_browse_raw should start just by saying

mne_browse_raw
