[Mne_analysis] Aligning sensor space with MRI

Hi!

I want to understand what happens if the EEG digitized points are not lying exactly on top of the skin/head surface while aligning EEG digitized points with MRI coordinates. I have aligned the fiducial points well, but some electrode points are in and some are out of the head surface.
Are the exact electrode locations used for calculating distance between source and sensor space? Or the electrode locations projected onto the head surface?
