Folks:
I would like to get up-to-date on our FreeSurfer installation. Are there some notes which describe the various snapshots at:
ftp://surfer.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/pub/dist/ ?
In particular, some of these downloads are much huger than others, which makes one wonder what's included in each.
I also tried to see if there were some email messages covering this in the archives, but the archive seems to be broken currently:
http://mail.nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/pipermail/freesurfer/
... returns "Forbidden" -- ie: permissions problem.
Regards,
Graham
Graham,
We are currently preparing to release a new stable version of our binary (which, admittedly, is long overdue).
We are also preparing to put a substantial amount of documentation on- line at a 'wiki' site that we maintain. A 'wiki' is a website that allows a community to collectively edit the site's contents. We have maintained such a thing internally here at the Martinos Center, and have decided to make it publicly readable, coincident with the new release. We hope it will address the documentation needs of the FreeSurfer community.
When the release material (platform binaries and documentation) is complete (following our testing procedures), the current contents of the website will be archived, and only the supported platforms will be available. So, this means that you can expect the contents of pub/dist/ to change soon.
The difference in size in binaries that you see in the pub/dist/ directory is due to the inclusion of new subcortical segmentation software in the newer 'dev' releases (the unsupported development releases). The new subcortical segmentation functionality will be part of the new stable release.
Also, the mail archive is now found at:
http://www.mail-archive.com/freesurfer@nmr.mgh.harvard.edu/
We will make an announcement on this FreeSurfer mailing list when the release is ready (expected early September).
Nick
