Yes, based on the surfaces. We use Anderson Winkler's truncated pyramid method.

Is "total cortical gray matter volume" from aseg.stats calculated based on the recon-all Surfaces?  Or using a different method?

I ask because I have been trying to calculate the grey matter volume based on the area between the surfaces, and I have been getting different results.
