Dear FS experts,
Is it necessary to do spatial smoothing for cortical folding measures (curv/sulc/smoothwm.FI.crv/pial_lgi, etc.)? These cortical folding measures are inherently smooth based on the computation methods used. If spatial smoothing is still needed, what's the recommended smoothing kernel size?
Thanks!
Yang Hu
Hi Yang
the size of the smoothing kernel depends on the size of the effect you are looking for (this is called the matched filter theorem), so there is no general smoothing size that is appropriate. We smooth a bit by default for visualization purposes, but you can pick any smoothing size you like
cheers Bruce

Usually not for LGI. People usually don't use curv or sulc in group studies, so the question does not usually come up. For thickness, we usually use 5-10mm
