Hello list,
I recently installed freesurfer on a dell laptop running centos 5.5. After installing successfully, I ran the suggested test commands on the freesurfer wiki (e.g., tkmedit bert orig.mgz; tksurfer bert rh pial; qdec). All returned the same error: Exec format error. Wrong Architecture.
I googled this, and I noticed someone else was having a similar problem on August 9th 2010 and never got a reply from the list. I also saw someone getting a similar error in a non-freesurfer context, and it had something to do with their c compiler. My centos install is for the most part stock; and I'm not what you'd call a linux expert. Does anyone know what this is about?

Thanks for your reply. Probably just a reflection of my ignorance, but when I downloaded the program, there was only one archive for 32 and 64 bit platforms. And it looked like the installation instructions did not have any steps for the installer to be specifying whether they have a 32 bit or 64 bit machine.
Did I install incorrectly?

contains the instructions for determining whether you have a 32b or 64b linux machine. basically, just type:
uname -m
and if it says 'x86_64', then you have a 64b machine.

Thanks Nick. I know my machine is 32b and its an intel Pentium m processor; however, I don't understand how my installation procedure would be different whether the machine is 32 or 64 bit, because the installation archive is the same and the instructions are the same. Or at least that's how I'm reading them:

I think the problem might be the Pentium-M architecture that doesn't support SSE3 instructions neither 64bit instructions. I'm not sure FreeSurfer 5 will run on Pentium-M

in looking at the Download page, i see now some implicit knowledge is necessary. ie, 'x86_64' is for 64bit architectures and so the other one is 32b by implication. also, there is no 32b version of our centos 5 build. probably i should just remove the centos 5 build as the centos 4 build should be sufficient (in our center, we use the centos 4 build on our centos 5 machines).
it could also be the case, as Pedro Paulo pointed out, that your pentium doesnt support SSE instructions. this would be the case if your machine is from 2004 or earlier.

Thanks for your reply. Probably just a reflection of my ignorance, but when I downloaded the program, there was only one archive for 32 and 64 bit platforms. And it looked like the installation instructions did not have any steps for the installer to be specifying whether they have a 32 bit or 64 bit machine.
Did I install incorrectly?

Maybe you are using the 32bit version in a 64bit Linux or vice versa

OK, so it looks like my error was that there is no 32bit version for centos 5 and I installed the 64 bit version on my 32 bit laptop, right? Is there a 32 bit version for centos 5?
