Hello,
I've been looking through the tutorials and this list but couldn't find the answer:
is it possible to create a surface from fMRI data *without* the anatomical MRI data?
I know I can use mri_vol2surf but it needs a "subject" parameter, so I need to run recon-all before to create the surfaces, right?
Is it possible to create a subject and surfaces (spherical, etc) with only the fMRI data?
Thanks in advance for any help!

Hi Leonardo
no, sorry that's not really possible.

Hi! Thanks for the quick reply Bruce!
I'm wondering if it's not possible because there was no need to implement it since I can always create the surface from the anatomical data that has a much higher resolution and then "project" the functional data in it, or it's because it doesn't make sense, since the nature of functional data would render the surface unreliable, or it suffer from distortions, or any reason like that.
In the first case, if it's a good idea, where should I start to implement it from source code in the CVS? dev/mri_vol2surf ?
But if I get the anatomical data, I just want to compare 2 subjects fMRI with my algorithm, so I want the functional data compared in the same surface (or as I'm thinking about it, the two functional data "corrected" to the "same position"). I'm following the GroupAnalysis Tutorial (and the QdecGroupAnalysis / MultiModalFmriIndividual), and as far as I understood I need to run
recon-all -s subj1 -qcache recon-all -s subj2 -qcache
so I'll get an "fsaverage" surface in the [surf] directory of both subjects, and then
mri_vol2surf --mov subj1func.nii --regheader subj1 --hemi lh --o lh.subj1func.mgh mri_vol2surf --mov subj2func.nii --regheader subj2 --hemi lh --o lh.subj2func.mgh
at last
mri_surf2surf --srcsubject subj1 --trgsubject fsaverage --sval lh.subj1func.mgh --cortex --hemi lh mri_surf2surf --srcsubject subj2 --trgsubject fsaverage --sval lh.subj2func.mgh --cortex --hemi lh
is that right? (and finally run mris_convert to export the surface to nii again)
Thanks in advance!

it's becasue the functional data typically doesn't have high enough CNR or spatial resolution.
