no, and it isn't inflation, strictly speaking. The spherical mapping minimizes metric distortion, which to us is more neuroscientifically plausible. The conformal maps minimize (local) angular distortion and push all the distortion into area compression and expansion. Metric distortion minimizes a balance of them
