Try either opening up the permissions in $FREESURFER_HOME/subjects, or copy the file to your home directory and executing the mri_convert command there instead.
By default mac uses root permission for programs installed under /Applications

I’ve searched the list and was unable to find someone with the same error in the archives. Any thoughts on how to fix this?
