I think the version that you have probably only reads in bfloats. We have a newer version that will read in other formats. If this is the case, then convert your .img to bfloat:
mri_convert yourstat.img yourstat_000.bfloat
Then in Load->Overlay, specify yourstat (not the full yourstat_000.bfloat).
