It might mean that it does not exist in that brain or in that segmentation volume. Eg, aseg.mgz will not have any of the cortical structures because they are not defined in aseg.mgz (but are in aparc+aseg.mgz).

Doug,
Thanks for the reply. So when I see 0's, does this mean that a match for that label does not exist in this brain? This would make sense for hypointensities, but I am consistently getting 0's for the internal capsule, which should exist in every brain.
Thanks, Dana

This is an annoyance with the way the summary stats are produced. When we run the program that generates the stats table, we pass it FreeSurferColorLUT.txt and ask it to report on all the segmentations in the LUT. The problem is that no segmentation volume has *all* of these individual segmentations defined, so they get reported as 0s. We can tell it to report only non-0s, but it might be the case that a segmentation does not exist because nothing matching the label was found in a particular brain (eg, white matter hypointensities), whereas it might exist in others. This would generate tables that had different labels for each subject.

In my wmparc.stats file I have noticed that for many structures I am just getting a value of 0. I do get output for ctx and wm values corresponding to the aparc structures and for subcortical structures corresponding to the aseg.stats file. However, towards the end of the document, there is a whole list of structures with 0 for volumes (e.g. internal capsule, thalamic regions). Why am I not getting any output for these regions?
I have attached a wmparc.stats file for reference.
Thanks, Dana
