The eTIV we compute comes from a recent article by Denise Head with Randy Buckner as senior author. Basically they observed that the TIV could be estimated from the determinant of the talairach transfroms (since it encodes the scaling of the xform). Sorry, I don't have the ref handy, but it shouldn't be too hard to find.
