no, the surfaces shouldn't affect the volume of the ventricles, so if that is all you care about just inspect the aseg.

We are primarily interested in ventricular volume but we may look at other areas in the future; this is why I thought it would be a good idea to check the surfaces. Is the reasoning why the surface outputs vs. aseg outputs should be checked is because the surface outputs are used the calculate the structure's volumes? I am fairly new to Freesurfer so I am trying to get a good understanding of it.
