bbregister is known to be really could at registering functionals to T1w image. I am curious as to whether synthmorph performs close to bbregister or not when registering epi to the structural.
We haven't explored this yet, but I'd be curious to know as well.

Bbregister is rigid by default (since it is within subject), so you would need a rigid/affine version of synthmorph
