Freesurfer releases require various linux system libraries/packages to be installed on the system in order for the binaries to run. Expanding a tar archive does not perform any dependency checks or subsequently try to install what is needed for everything to run, i.e., it is not practical for us to try and troubleshoot an individual users setup and identify what is missing when a binary fails to run. We can't prevent someone from expanding the installer packages like tar files into some arbitrary location, but we only support linux setups where an actual install has been done with the .rpm or .deb file. One option is to test running a new version of freesurfer in a container or VM where you should have admin/root privileges to do the install.

TAR archives were useful to install without root privileges. However deb files can be extracted in a similar way with dpkg-deb or ar+tar commands, I'm actually using this approach for latest versions.

I’m well aware of the difference between an archive and a package. But that didn’t stop FS to release archives in the past until 8.x.
The wiki even mentions the archives as a fallback in the section for 7.x and 8.x. And we never had issues using these for many years. I also checked the release notes and could not find any mention of archives being discontinued. And that’s why I asked if they are discontinued.
VM/container is an option but one that is not always available. But we have now an unpacked package and will use that.
PS: Your answer sound like you speak for the FS team (‘we’), but all I can see is the name “R” and what looks like a disposable anonymous email address. It would be nice to know if someone speaks officially for the team.
MFG,
Manuel Hewitt
