The problem is that the DICOM files are JPEG compressed, and currently
Freesurfer only supports raw data format.
A work-around is to use a converter, such as MRIcro to load the files
and convert to a supported format, such as that output by the MRIcro's
Import->Conversion wizard tool. Then run mri_convert with that file
(a .img extension is produced). I've done this, and mri_convert
produces the desired COR files. I can post either the .img file or the
COR files for ftp download if you like.
Better DICOM file validation will appear in a future version of
Freesurfer.
